Job Description:
Summary The Surgical Health Technician is assigned to the
Podiatry Outpatient Clinic which is organizationally responsible to
the Podiatric Division of the Department of Surgery. Works under
the general supervision of the Chief, Podiatry Section, which has
in-excess of 28,000 patient encounters per year, to include direct
and indirect support. Incumbent is delegated authority to provide
patient care and support to routine cases and for a variety of
specialized procedures for a staff of 15. Responsibilities Major
duties include but not limited to: Sets up and assists Podiatric
surgeons and other providers in the performance of treatments and
procedures following aseptic technical to include minor surgical
procedures. Reviews patient charts for verification of identity and
proper documentation including surgical consent following site and
procedure verification process. Notifies appropriate staff of
test/procedure results and ensures they are made part of the
medical record Assures proper stock levels and care of all
instruments used in the Podiatry clinic. Answers inquiries of other
personnel in clinic when possible to reduce the need for
interrupting the Podiatrists. Provides administrative support to
the unit, prepares room for multiple clinic visits with quick
turn-around, selects and arranges appropriate instruments, packs,
fittings, ancillary equipment. Submits patient's name for patient
education audits; Document/Perform patient charting using
appropriate documentation template, standard medical terminology
for human body, physical and emotional reactions, nursing care, and
contraindications to medications, etc. Performs patient care
procedures: collection of specimens, applying wound care dressings,
adjusting simple supportive equipment. Assists with all procedures
including, but not limited to nail debridement of ingrown,
elongated or fungal toenails with and without cautery, debridement
of warts, calluses, diabetic ulcers/blister care, and assesses for
infection. Work Schedule: M-F 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Telework: Not

Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet
all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,
05/09/2022 Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current
Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52
weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date
of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52
weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but
must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows
your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your
application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective
date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you
possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In

appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and education
as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year
of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower
grade in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the
organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically
include, but are not limited to: assisting in positioning patients,
assisting in managing reusable medical equipment, assisting in
bedside procedures, assisting with surgeries, setting up sterile
kits, maintaining surgical equipment, etc. GS-07: A minimum of
one-year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade
level: Assisting with complex surgeries such as scrubbing hearts or
orthopedic surgeries. Setting up sterile fields. Training other
professionals on equipment. OR Graduate education or an internship
meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those
instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for
GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be
the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined
to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot
be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered
as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time
graduate education is creditable in accordance with its
relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

includes physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking,
stooping, bending, reaching and lifting of equipment and supplies,
lifting and positioning of patient limbs and/or patients (average
150 lbs adult male) with assistive devices, such as patients' lift
for transfers. Hand-eye coordination to apply casts and braces and
to assemble and maintain DME and reusable surgical equipment. For
