specialty; open to first-time travelers Description: Telemetry,
Labor and Delivery, Emergency, and Critical Care RNs will take a
proctored dysrhythmia test onsite on the first day. This is a
PASS/FAIL test. Holiday requests will be considered; however, they
are not guaranteed. The unit is a true telemetry unit with a total
of 38 beds. Common certifications include ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS.
Patient-to-nurse ratios are typically 1 to 3-4. The electronic
medical record system used is Cerner. Common diagnoses and types of
patients include CHF, COPD, renal failure, respiratory failure,
alcohol withdrawal, and post-PCI. RNs are not required to titrate
drips. Common titratable or set rate drips include DKA, Heparin
gtt, Amiodarone gtt, and Cardizem gtt, all protocol-driven or set
rates. There is one nurse shift manager who acts as the team lead
and two resource/break RNs who do not take assignments. There are
2-3 unit aides available on the unit. Respiratory equipment
includes BiPAP, CPAP, and HFNC; there are no vents available.
Central telemetry monitoring is provided with two monitor techs.
Nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips and must
pass the dysrhythmia exam. Shifts are 12 hours long from 6:45 to
7:15. Schedules are made approximately three weeks in advance.
Self-scheduling is allowed by seniority, and shift trades are
available. There is no block scheduling. Weekend requirements
include working four weekend shifts in a four-week schedule.
Holiday requirements involve working into the permanent staff
rotation. There is no call or standby requirement. Float
requirements include floating to Med/Surg departments. Uniforms
should be navy in color. Orientation is one shift on the unit. The
unit is very busy, usually full at 38 patients. There is a strong
emphasis on bedside shift reports, patient experience, HCAHPS, and
core measures. Candidates should be self-motivated and
team-oriented. The unit is very traveler-friendly. The facility can
cancel up to four shifts per 13-week assignment. Charting is
conducted using the Cerner system. A BSN is not required. A Trauma
Level 2 care setting is provided. The division is nursing.
