Under limited direction, to perform responsible and complex
engineering work in the review, design and investigation of plans
for residential, commercial and industrial building construction
including equipment installation plans, calculations and test
results; to inspect buildings and structures at various stages of
construction or alteration; to supervise and direct the work of
professional and support engineering and building personnel; to
schedule and coordinate work assignments and processes related to
the plan review and permit process; to perform related work as

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work
is required in the inspection of various land use developments,
construction sites. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate
computers and various pieces of office equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is

finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Principles of civil engineering with emphasis in
structural engineering; building construction codes, Uniform Fire
Code, ordinances and enforcement requirements related to
structural, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning and related
installations; State and Federal regulations related to building
construction and Uniform Fire Codes; and energy requirements and
principles and techniques of building inspection work.
Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative and effective
working relationships with persons of diverse backgrounds.
Experience: Five years' experience in the design or review of
building construction plans or four years' experience performing
plan checking duties for a public agency.
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited
college or university with major course work in civil engineering,
structural engineering, architecture or related field. Registration
as a Civil Engineer or Architect by the State of California and
International Code Council (ICC) Building Plan Examiner
certification within one year of hire.
Additional Requirement: Possession of a valid California Driver
Education: Registration as a Structural Engineer by the State of
California is desirable
